Velasquez, Williams, Pipe Win Opening Night Of Dwarf Car Nationals At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA…June 9…Nick Velasquez of Camarillo won the 20 lap Pro Dwarf Car Main Event Friday night Antioch Speedway. This was the opening night of the WSDCA Dwarf Car Nationals, hosted by the Delta Dwarf Car Association.

Velasquez bolted into the lead at the start with Chance Russell of Antioch running an early second. Bay Point’s Danny Wagner moved into third on Lap 3, and he quickly struck to second. A bout with the front stretch wall on Lap 7 saw Shawn Whitney of Lotus roll. Fortunately, he wasn’t injured. Velasquez continued to lead Wagner and Russell on the restart, but Anthony Pope of Roseburg, Oregon moved into third on Lap 8. Pope found himself in a battle with Trent Morley of Woodland Hills for the third position. Morley grabbed the spot for good on Lap 15. Velasquez went on to win ahead of Wagner, Morley, Pope and Michael Tobiason of Ramona.

Ronnie Williams of Las Vegas won the 20 lap Veteran Dwarf Car Main Event. Auburn’s Dan Geil set the early pace ahead of Kevin Bender of Rocklin. Bender was involved in a mishap on Lap 8 as Geil continued to lead Frankie Politelli of Simi Valley on the restart. Williams was running third at that point, and he was set up for a big move following a yellow flag on Lap 16. On the restart, Williams made his move exiting Turn 2 and charged from third to first by the time they made their way down the back straightaway. Williams went on to victory with Geil settling for second ahead to Politelli, Pete Piantanida of Discovery Bay and Danny Hannel of Shingle Springs.

Point leader Jarrett Soares of Gilroy won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. Roy Fisher of Antioch set the early pace ahead of Steve Bruno of Pittsburgh. James East of Oakley moved into second on the third lap with Soares settling into third a lap later. Soares moved into second on Lap 7 and made a high pass in Turn 2 a lap later to take the lead from Fisher. Nick Larson of Vallejo settled into third on the 17th lap and moved into second two laps later. Soares won ahead of Larson, Fisher, Kevin Box at Bethel Island and East.

Troy Foulger of Oakley won his fourth 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event to maintain his point lead. Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista led his father Jason Robles at the start with Foulger quickly moving into third. On the fourth lap, Folger moved between both Robles cars down the back stretch and emerged with the lead. A lap later, Concord’s Travis Dutra went low in Turn 2 to take third from Kenneth Robles and made a high pass around Jason Robles a lap later for second. Foulger and Dutra pulled away from the pack with Terry DeCarlo Jr of Martinez battling Jason Robles for third. DeCarlo emerged with the second position on a Lap 14 restart, but Dutra made an inside pass on the back stretch on Lap 19 to regain second. Foulger won ahead of Dutra, DeCarlo, Jason Robles and Kenneth Robles.

Marek Pipe of Greeley, Colorado won the time-limit shortened 12 lap Sportsman Dwarf Car Main Event. The race had several yellow flags that saw the 20 minute time limit expire. Daniel Peters of Camarillo took the early lead ahead of Brenden Shrum of Lincoln. Pipe moved into third on the fifth lap and gained second on a Lap 7 restart. A low pass in Turn 4 of the eighth lap gained Pipe the lead from Peters. Peters had problems a lap later. Pipe was leading when the checkered flag was displayed on Lap 12. Isaak Geil of Auburn ended up second ahead of Tyler Fulcher of Ojai, Dewey Meyers of Ramona and Peters.
